The self-propelled lift boat was mobilized for repairs at Grandweld Shipyard in Dubai Maritime City (DMC). Grandweld strictly committed to completion times and also ensured high levels of safety was achieved for the activities completed.

Grandweld’s ship repair completed a jack-up rig repair inside Dubai Maritime City’s (DMC) harbour for Gulf Marine Services (GMS).

History of rig repairs:

Grandweld has a long history of doing jack-up rig repairs. This includes lift-boat repairs for GMS back to the 1990’s and Grandweld has several clients with lift-boats that serve international offshore sectors.

DMC is an ideal port for this work because it is a dedicated marine repair facility, it has unobstructed sea access and a large wharf. Dubai provides major logistics support. Dubai is a regional hub for marine repairs, having the headquarters of many OEMs based near Grandweld for support services and spare parts supply.

Scope:

The scope included accommodation work. This scope included Air Handling Unit (AHU) replacement that also required electrical, fabrication and outfitting services. These AHUs were oversized, with challenges overcome through good coordination with the client.  Hot work and cold work was completed on the helideck, with jobs including replacement of the landing net and frame.

Risk assessments and safety:

Risk control is highly important in such jobs. Grandweld arranged a seabed survey to enable safe spud placement and critically, also safely completed the erection of the hanging scaffolding at a great height from the helideck. Grandweld’s project and safety teams conducted detailed risk-assessment and ensured close supervision was done around the clock to ensure working at these heights was done safely.

Additional jobs included underwater diving operations using a surface diving spread. During this diving operation, a survey was done to check for obstacles that may interfere with the bow thruster and jack-up legs.

Commendations:

Grandweld’s management would like to congratulate the repair team on this highly successful job, and special recognition is provided to the scaffolding & safety teams for the safe and successful hanging staging work done on the helideck.
