Delivering Excellence in Record Time: Afloat Repair Completed in Just 11 Days
When time is limited and precision is critical, only well-coordinated teamwork can deliver success. Grandweld Ship Repair Division recently proved this once again by completing an extensive afloat repair project in just 11 days for a major Singapore-headquartered container shipping client.
Understanding the Challenge
The client’s top priority was clear — the vessel had to be made available within a strict 11-day port stay, with no room for delay. Meeting this requirement meant our team needed to plan, organize, and execute every activity with utmost precision. Time efficiency wasn’t just a goal; it was the benchmark that defined this project.
Pre-Planning: The Foundation of Success
Our success began long before the vessel arrived. The Engineering and Project teams collaborated closely with the client to finalize structural designs, take onboard measurements, and prepare detailed fabrication drawings well in advance.
Recognizing the limited repair window, the workshop team began pre-fabrication of required steel structures, platforms, and deck components ahead of time. This proactive approach ensured that once the vessel berthed, our teams could proceed directly with installation instead of starting from scratch.
Scope of Work
The project encompassed a comprehensive range of structural and outfitting renewals across multiple areas of the vessel. Major works included the renewal of accommodation scupper drainpipes, mooring winch brake holding supports, main mast navigation lights, and antenna supports on the bridge deck. Our team also undertook the renewal of main mast ladders, hatch guides, and all platforms between hatch covers — including associated handrails, chequered plates, and walkway pillar supports.
Additional tasks involved the renewal of lashing pad eyes, container shoes, and platform structures on the main deck and ship sides, as well as electrical panel support guard plates. The project scope was further supported by NDT services and the erection of tower and hanging scaffolding, ensuring all works were executed in full compliance with Grandweld’s stringent quality and safety standards.
This project highlights how meticulous planning, real-time coordination, and a deeply committed workforce can deliver exceptional results even within the most demanding schedules.
A big thank you to our Ship Repair Division for their relentless dedication and flawless execution — and to our valued client for their continued cooperation and collaboration at every stage of the project. Together, we turned a challenging timeline into another Grandweld success story.
